Unit Fields

Add custom data fields to any unit — weight, expiry date, color, size, and more — and they appear automatically on every product using that unit.

Overview

Unit Fields let you attach extra data inputs to any unit of measurement. When a product uses that unit, the configured fields appear automatically on the product form — no custom coding required.

For example, if you sell goods by the kilogram, you can add a "Net weight" number field and an "Expiry date" date field to the kg unit. Every product assigned to kg will then display those fields for data entry.

Unit Fields are defined once and reused across every product that shares the same unit. No duplication, no manual entry.

How It Works

Unit Fields follow a simple three-step flow: define fields, assign them to units, then add products. Here is how it works end to end.

  1. Create Unit Fields

Go to Settings → Unit Fields and click "Add Field". Give the field a name (e.g. "Net weight") and choose its input type: Number, Date, Text, or Color.

    Net weight Number Default
    Expiry date Date
    Color Color

All changes saved in one click.

  2. Assign Fields to a Unit

Open any unit (Settings → Units) and select the fields you want to attach to it. A single field can be assigned to multiple units.

  3. Fields Appear on the Product Form

When you create or edit a product, select its unit from the dropdown. The fields assigned to that unit appear instantly — no page reload needed.

  4. Data Saved with the Product

Values entered in the unit fields are saved as part of the product record and can be used in stock tracking, reports, and document generation.

Field Types

Each unit field has an input type that controls how data is entered and validated.

Number

For numeric values such as weight, quantity, dimensions, or counts. Supports decimals.

Date

For date-based fields like expiry date, manufacture date, or service date.

Text

For free-form labels such as material, grade, origin, or any descriptive note.

Color

For colour-coded products — apparel, paint, fabric, or anything sold in multiple colours.

Key Features

Plug-and-Play Setup

Define a field once, assign it to a unit, and it immediately appears on all products using that unit.

Reusable Across Units

One field (e.g. "Expiry date") can be attached to multiple units — kg, liters, boxes — without duplicating setup.

Fully Customisable

Add, rename, enable, or disable fields at any time. Changes reflect immediately across all products using that unit.

Ordered Display

Set a sort order for fields so the most important inputs always appear first on the product form.

Real-World Examples

Here are common unit and field combinations used across different types of businesses.

Unit Fields Common Use
kg Kilograms Net weight Expiry date Food, pharmaceuticals, raw materials — track weight and shelf life.
box Boxes Items per box Packaged goods — know how many items are inside each box and the shipping weight.
pcs Pieces Size Color Clothing, furniture, accessories — capture size, colour, and material per piece.
L Liters Expiry date Beverages, chemicals, fuels — track volume and expiry alongside the product.
h Hours Expiry date Service businesses — tag billable hours with an expiry or contract date.
Mix and match field types for the same unit. For example, a box unit can have both a number field (Items per box) and a text field (Box grade).
